00:00.11 James Welcome back, everyone. Submerged Conflict, your Catfield episode. I'm one of your hosts, James Montemagno. With me, my illustrious... Co-host. and cat sidekick Frank Krueger. 00:12.75 James And yes. 00:14.77 Frank Hi, James. How are you? It's wonderful to be here. This is week three of Cattail. Um, For those keeping track, the cattail is here. 00:22.17 James Uh-oh. 00:26.23 James It's great. This is the most active I've seen your cat on your keyboard. 00:27.33 Frank okay 00:29.45 James I work with Kayla cinnamon. And she has three cats. And what's great about having three cats. is that those cats are everywhere all the time all at once. 00:41.69 James Yeah. 00:41.91 Frank Yeah, yeah. See, this cat, I can, usually she gets bored with me after about five minutes. So yeah, if you have three cats, then maybe one is always actively interested in you, though I doubt that. heavily. Well, I hope ah everyone can enjoy. cat cam if it comes back. 00:59.12 Frank it. 00:59.07 James Cat cam. ah wo o um I got a few updates. Frank Krueger, I think this is a... 01:03.83 Frank Okay. 01:05.46 James Update. Update episode. Okay. 01:08.12 Frank I like that feedback. Follow up. 01:10.14 James Feet. ah got feet Oh, I should probably look at the... the the youtube then if that's the case dude dude dude okay one 01:16.23 Frank Yeah. 01:17.30 James Let's give give it a Mac a mac update. Mac. 01:20.55 Frank Okay. 01:21.12 James Update. 01:22.74 Frank 27 is still... Buggy is all hack. That's my macOS update. How's your macOS update? 01:28.66 James Dude, bro, i've I've... I logged on to my Mac mini for the first time in like a week. I've never had so many apps wanting to update. 01:33.44 Frank ah 01:35.100 James And. 01:36.15 Frank Oh yeah, that's true. 01:38.67 James ah It was kind of crazy, yeah. 01:39.80 Frank What? Well, you know, we did have I think you can finally preorder the iPhone Duo. And they went fast from what I can tell. It seems to be a hit. um but it seems like everyone's getting their phones in january which is good because i think Technically, by the time this episode comes out, some people might actually have duos, which means... 02:00.70 Frank I just had an update to my apps, which means I need to finish the update to my update of the apps to make sure it's Duo compatible using the new SDK. 02:09.65 James I was just... um I was just looking at the... Dot net blog. And I think. Gerald. 02:20.38 James yeah gerald put out a get your .net maui apps ready for xcode 27 which is he should have put out beforehand but this is the you need a ui scene 02:26.90 Frank Mm hmm. 02:28.44 James You know, you need the UI scene. 02:29.57 Frank Yeah. 02:29.48 James It's got to happen. 02:31.04 Frank Yeah. 02:31.21 James Um, i created my own skill to do it because you need to update your pipeline you'd update your ui scenes and do other things however they also have a plug-in called maui labs that does a bunch of stuff for you the thing i'm not really seeing here is I don't see a update your app for iPhone Duo and I want a skill. 02:52.50 James that would put that together for maui apps for swift apps i think that would be really nice just be like hey i have this app what's the 02:52.94 Frank Yeah. 03:00.96 James oomph that i need to do agents go agents go wild on it you know 03:02.88 Frank Peace. Yeah, and this is the first time Xcode actually ships with that skill. So if you go read Apple's docs, they will tell you how to activate their own internal skill. 03:09.88 James Oh. 03:15.42 Frank So um what I plan on doing, and I really should have done this last week. was you can have Xcode dump out all its skill files too. I don't know. adjacent file or something, some someplace. And then I was planning on copying the Xcode one and then tailoring it for .NET and such. So if you're going to do that, I recommend taking that approach. Start with Xcode's built-in one. 03:38.89 James I'm excited for your blog in which you just give me said skills to give to co pilots. 03:41.74 Frank Okay, fine. I will work on that tonight. 03:43.06 James So Good. Um, 03:46.71 Frank But it's... 03:46.50 James So that's good. i 03:46.94 Frank it's it's Sorry, just it's it's kind of fun that IDEs are just shipping skills now, I guess. Skills are mainstream, bro. 03:54.78 James I think they have to be, you know. And I think visual studio ships, a bunch of them for .net and there's a .net skills pack and there's all this stuff. I mean, I think ideally. You know what I what I told Gerald, I was reviewing his blog post and I said, you know what this blog is missing. 04:08.51 James a skill to do this. Like, don't, I mean, it's nice that. 04:10.20 Frank Isn't that funny? 04:11.26 James I read the blog. I'm like, this is nice. Here's this stuff, blah, blah, blah. And they even have like a, they have a They have a legitimately like the Maui CLI, you can say Maui AI list skill. 04:22.12 James There's also like Maui ad skill Xcode migration. So like you can. literally do this run the skill they can like add all these packs and all this stuff and i said give me the skill And I said, it's nice it's there, but please also link to. 04:34.01 James just the markdown file so I can just like blob it because it's a one time shot. I never need it. I don't actually need this skill. 04:38.65 Frank Yeah. 04:39.95 James but i just like blob it over and like do the thing. 04:42.11 Frank Yeah. 04:42.97 James But now that I have the blog post, I can basically also use that as a skill too, which is kind of convenient. But that was one thing that I actually caught. they They caught me on it. I did have a crashing app when I submitted. 04:54.12 James And that was totally on me because I. 04:56.23 Frank Oh. 04:56.03 James the I... was creating a new app. I've released a lot of apps recently. recently 05:01.45 Frank a 05:02.15 James But I was releasing. the skiing app On Mac. 05:05.91 Frank Yes. 05:06.84 James and on ios updates and i had just updated my pipelines to xcode 27 not realizing that that UICN support was super required. 05:17.53 James And it is. 05:17.80 Frank Yeah. 05:18.20 James so There's that. 05:20.13 Frank Otherwise you get letterboxed or do you actually crash? Was that the thing? Like a UI scene would crash you? 05:24.12 James crash 05:25.12 Frank Yeah. 05:25.67 James ah Hard crash. 05:26.07 Frank Okay. 05:26.72 James Heartcrash. 05:27.00 Frank Right. 05:27.70 James Yep. 05:27.69 Frank Okay. So. 05:28.43 James Yep. 05:29.15 Frank I think I need to prioritize it. I think I switched over to scenes in most of my apps, but of course my main app, I'm i'm not sure if I actually have because I kept my version compatibility so far back. 05:40.03 Frank on the main app. But um I'm not sure if we announced it on the podcast, but Apple's really pushing right now. You have to submit apps that are iOS 13 and newer, which. fair enough it's a pretty old os but come april april 2027 it'll be ios 15 and newer so Goodbye, old supported things. But I was telling you, it's kind of fine because actually one of my oldest iPads, and it's not even that old, but one of my oldest iPads is stuck at iOS 16. 06:09.50 Frank So I think supporting 15 is valid. i just I still see customers downloading. on older operating systems. I just hate dropping support for them. 06:19.24 James I also, when I did this, cause also I needed to do it for the Mac OS application too. is i don't think that it I don't know if it, I don't think it hard crashes with the UI scene. I think only iOS does. I could be wrong actually. Maybe the Mac apps do too. 06:32.88 James But. um what i noticed is that there's a requirement also for mac os already i think it's a mac os 15, I want to say. You have to ship. on like i had to drop support for mac os 2 when i updated xcode 27 so 06:42.56 Frank Okay. 06:45.74 Frank Okay. 06:47.64 James prepare yourself for your backups. 06:47.70 Frank Yeah, I thought I was still on 12 for that, but yeah, okay. Yeah, it's tough. It's tough. I think Mac, they've they've been a little bit better. Like some pretty old Macs can get some pretty modern versions of the OS. It's it's all devices that I hate. dropping. 07:03.03 James And... And OK, let me look at my. Okay. One, there's two there's a few things of TLDR, just important information. I can confirm. Mac. Catalyst is. 07:13.85 James Mac OS 17 and plus. 07:16.64 Frank Wow. 07:17.33 James Yep, that's a requirement. 07:17.52 Frank Okay. They're really pushing us along. 07:18.36 James and 07:19.86 Frank Okay. 07:20.18 James And... Get out of here. X 64. We talked about this before, but I got the rejection that X 64 was in there. 07:23.96 Frank Yeah. 07:26.37 James So it had to be armed 64 only. So add that runtime identifier people it's happening. 07:32.01 Frank You actually got a rejection for a fat binary? Oh, for a new app. For old apps, I think it's still okay. 07:37.69 James Yep. 07:37.61 Frank Right. 07:38.29 James New app, new app. 07:38.58 Frank Okay. 07:38.96 James Yeah, New Up was stringent, that is. 07:39.31 Frank Got it. Yeah. 07:41.36 James for for sure it was yolo and in so kind of crazy 07:41.88 Frank Mm hmm. Bye. You know, I don't do I don't subscribe to the force obsolescence narrative because mostly I feel like Apple really supports old hardware, but. 07:55.45 Frank They are definitely pushing us along this year, like from an active upper point of view. 07:58.36 James yeah 07:59.72 Frank This is a year they're just like giving us kicks in the butt. 08:03.14 James I agree. Um... Let's see. 08:07.31 Frank That was my Mac update. What's your Mac update? 08:09.87 James I still have my Mac mini. 08:09.95 Frank Okay. 08:11.67 James uh we talked about me getting rid of my mac mini so the mac mini 08:11.94 Frank ha um 08:15.64 James has officially gone on the internal buy sell additionally on the github for sale slack and then 08:19.04 Frank Ah. 08:22.75 James It has now been officially listed on Facebook Marketplace. 08:26.63 Frank Oh. Okay. 08:27.43 James Yep. 08:28.22 Frank But real business happens. 08:28.29 James so 08:29.90 Frank You put your business hat on if you're on the Facebook marketplace. 08:34.16 James i I even updated my profile photo because I had like a really old one. 08:38.88 Frank Yeah. 08:39.11 James of like me and heather when we were in bali and i was like in this like temple thing was yeah i was really zoomed out but i was like oh If I'm going to sell this expensive thing, I should probably. actually look like it's me. 08:50.89 James but Which it is. 08:50.93 Frank Yeah. 08:52.24 James ah And so I did update that. I will say. Like. In general. you know i'm not 100 convinced i'll be able to sell it on facebook marketplace and i'm just asking for the price that i bought it for by the way too so i'm not even 09:02.30 Frank Hmm. 09:04.53 Frank Crazy. 09:05.79 James Yeah, I'm just. 09:06.04 Frank That's still pretty amazing though, isn't it? I mean, these aren't brand new computers here. So if you're... getting the money back for it that's pretty great granted you got to pay double now for the for a computer to replace it 09:13.72 James That's my... goal. goal For the new one. Yeah. um So that's really fascinating. I think if push comes to shove, I will go on to eBay. 09:25.05 Frank Mm hmm. 09:25.02 James you know, and and go from there. i live obviously in a you know i'm not like in portland metro but also i think the listings will show up in portland so like there's a possibility for that too uh down here but We'll see what happens. That being said, on the mac os update frank krueger i also Sold my ultra wide monitor. 09:44.11 James It's gone. 09:45.00 Frank Oh, no. I was so excited. 09:46.55 James Gone. 09:47.29 Frank Wait, this isn't the cool Goodwill monitor, is it? Because you buy so many monitors. 09:51.22 James Yeah. 09:51.80 Frank I've lost track. 09:53.65 James Now, the cool Goodwill monitor is over there with my Nintendo Wii, so it's over there. 09:56.51 Frank Excellent. Good. 09:58.10 James This is because my good friend, John Galloway said, Hey, it's Amazon big deals day. And I just bought this new monitor. Check it out. And I was like, oh, that's cool. 10:05.81 Frank right 10:06.98 James And it's Adele. 4K. 120 Hertz. 10:10.57 Frank nice 10:12.43 James Fake HDR. 10:12.49 Frank Cool. 10:14.14 James uh monitor 10:14.41 Frank Love it. 10:15.54 James And it was. 10:16.51 Frank micro micro led then probably 10:18.55 James No, it's Ips. It's Ips. So. 10:20.50 Frank Okay. 10:21.37 James Um, But... He was like, I did a lot of research and for the price. this is good i really like dell monitors i've had dell monitors for like ever to be honest with you they do they not a huge 10:28.05 Frank Mm hmm. Sure. Yeah. Pretty robust. 10:32.81 James Yeah, and they rotate, they do the thing, the stands are nice. 10:34.81 Frank Yeah. 10:36.07 James uh this one has really small bevels he's like i have a it's a 27 inch he's like i have a I have a 27 inch but it's so big because of the bevel so I'm replacing that. 10:44.93 Frank Oh, really? 10:45.45 James So. 10:45.27 Frank Yeah. 10:46.27 James I said, okay, get it. you know he's got the one day shipping in san diego so i said okay like give me Let me give me your one day impression and then I'll let you buy it for me because I don't have Amazon Prime. 10:55.61 Frank mm-hmm yeah 10:57.20 James So he had to buy it for me. I just leaned to Venmo him. 10:59.69 Frank Uh-huh. Sure you will. 11:01.50 James Yeah, I said, I think I just got a free monitor. 11:03.59 Frank but but 11:04.30 James I'm very sure. ah John does a lizard, right? so 11:07.25 Frank ah 11:07.78 James So he was like, I really like it. In fact, I'm buying two more 32 inch ones to replace my other 32 inch ones or something like that, or one 32 and another. 11:13.06 Frank Yeah. It's a slippery slope. 11:15.63 James Yeah. So he has three and that's too many. So I said, I'm really interested in narrowing down. 11:17.72 Frank Yeah. 11:19.47 James I went from two, I went to one ultra wide. Now I'm going to one 27 inch. And I sold my ultra wide on Facebook marketplace for 120 bucks, which was pretty good because I think it was like 250 or something. 11:26.89 Frank Okay. Ooh. Yeah. 11:32.10 James And it's been a long time on that one. to a college kid who just got like 11:36.82 Frank Perfect. 11:36.91 James is First machine for college. 11:37.79 Frank Yeah. 11:38.92 James Super excited. Glad I went to a good home. I met his mom. 11:43.08 Frank Fun. 11:43.21 James So. By the movie theater. and um I plugged it in. And now there's, this one has two HD mounted display port, which works out great. Has no USB on it, which I thought I'd be bothered to buy, but I have this huge anchor hub, so I actually don't need it at all. 11:58.80 Frank Yeah. 11:59.12 James And I like it has a really nice white base and really thin bezel. So it kind of matches. the aesthetics I'm kind of going for with my I have a new keyboard that's white. So kind of nice. And my big thing here was, will this make a difference? Cause it's a true 4k monitor. 12:14.34 James Will this make a difference with... The Mac Mini. Cause you know, my biggest issue. was that the 2k monitor that the ultrawide was I always had really weird scaling things that I couldn't do. 12:28.16 James on it. 12:28.39 Frank In Mac's defense, you always go through a ridiculous amount of dongles. So I'm curious, like, if you just go like the the rosy pathway is either plug into the HDMI port directly on the Mac, which is good. 12:42.94 Frank But the other rosy path is you use the. um Thunderbolt. to... DisplayPort adapter. 12:51.24 James Yep. 12:51.44 Frank That is the one Mac wants. Then Mac behaves itself. All other configurations, it gets... whiny. 12:58.26 James And that's what I've been doing. and 12:59.69 Frank Okay. 13:00.66 James This is my first time using it so far. And in my. uh app the what's this thing called better display In my slider, it actually defaulted to. 13:11.34 James 1080p. 13:12.75 Frank Yeah. 13:12.66 James As a resolution, which would be. 13:14.06 Frank Funny. 13:15.14 James 2x? 4x? I know whatever that is. 2x. 13:18.72 Frank Mac is so weird, though. Like, it could still be driving the monitor at 4K. It could be pumping that through the the the cable, but it might be... 13:27.26 James Oh yeah. 13:29.25 Frank rescaling the UI itself. So you've got to keep in mind in Mac, there's actually two worlds out there. Like what are the pixels it's pumping out versus what is the scale of the OS? And you have to go to your system information to figure out exactly what. Mac is deciding to do there. 13:47.38 Frank Because honestly, they hide it from you. 13:47.67 James That's good. 13:49.55 Frank quite a bit. 13:49.97 James How's that? That is a good Good. Point. um So. 13:54.47 Frank But I noticed... Sorry, I'll just interrupt you while you look. there When I upgraded to my Acer 32 inch monitor, which is actually a 240 hertz monitor, I noticed there was actually a trade off I had to go through, which was I had to dumb it down to, I forget, 120 hertz or 60 hertz. 14:13.26 Frank If I also wanted. HDR 1000, the new HDR protocol. There's HDR 10, HDR 1000, and Dolby Vision. Mac wants Dolby Vision. 14:24.28 Frank but No one wants to license Dolby Vision. 14:25.24 James I see. 14:26.69 Frank So it's funny, like you sometimes have to decrease your update rate just to support HDR. And for me, HDR is very important. 14:35.12 James I'll give you this one. You can type this in. It is the Dell S. Two seven. 2-5 14:43.78 Frank Oh no. 14:43.88 James QS. 14:45.33 Frank Oh God. 14:46.55 James Yes, that is what it is. 14:48.14 Frank Ciao. Two seven QS thing. 14:50.80 James Yeah. S2725QS. 14:51.43 Frank Okay. 14:55.44 James It's pretty cute So. 14:57.04 Frank okay 14:57.27 James in Inside my displays. You know, I have the slider of larger text all the way to more space. So it actually is scaling. So the scaling options is larger text, which is 1080p, which is like a 200 % scale. 15:10.35 James But the other increments are... like 120 140 160 and 200. for the They do a kind of opposite. opposite of what, you know, I kind of think it is. 15:21.61 Frank Mm hmm. 15:22.88 James But right now I have it on 120 and I gotta say. I think it's a lot better. Like, I think. I do think that. Mac OS on an ultra wide. 15:33.50 James I think for two years. has been crappy for me. And I. 15:37.78 Frank Oh no. 15:38.48 James I actually believe. that this 16 by 9. 4k monitor 15:45.90 Frank Yeah. 15:46.04 James is giving me. the correct resolution and scaling and things. that my eyes actually want. 15:53.22 Frank Okay. 15:53.43 James On it. 15:55.30 Frank Yeah, it was actually kind of nice upgrading to a 4K because I had been using... 15:55.65 James Interesting. 15:59.61 Frank call it like 3k i forget the exact resolution for a long time and you did see the pixels and even my 27 inches and i don't think a full 4k it's it's the in between Yeah, you do notice a difference. it's It's worth spending a few dollars on the monitor. That's what I convinced myself of this year. 16:18.41 Frank um So I'm glad it sounded like a good monitor. I will take one exception to it, James. 350 nits. That's not enough nits. You know, when when when you're watching a movie and the sunrise comes up over the earth, you should have to shield your eyes. 16:34.00 Frank You should be blinded. And you're going to need at least 5 ,000 to 7 ,000 nits in order to get the full blinding effect of HDR. 16:36.21 James yeah 16:44.30 Frank So that that's my only critique. Otherwise, it looks like a very nice monitor. 16:47.96 James Yeah, it is an LED monitor, right? So it's an IPS LED. It is. um you know, 120 hertz. response time, four to eight milliseconds to be based on different like modes, you know, 16 by nine, 178 viewing angle. 17:01.07 Frank Mm hmm. 17:03.64 James Um, swivel angles really nice pivot angles really nice anti-glare Really nice. I would say my other monitor was like maybe one nit. 17:12.56 Frank Oh, is that right? Was it that bad? 17:14.74 James That's really bad. 17:16.11 Frank Well, i' I've only gotten into nits a lot because I've been really into HDR a lot lately, but also I was looking to upgrade my television at home, and I have a very old OLED, one of the first generation OLEDs. 17:16.21 James Yeah. 17:29.08 James Hmm. 17:29.23 Frank And it's 700 nits. But what I learned is... um perceptual brightness is a logarithmic scale. versus nits which is basically just a linear power scale and so if I want to actually double the brightness of my TV I need to go up to 5000 nits. 17:48.03 Frank you know, going up to like 1400 nits isn't enough. So I've been very knit sensitive lately, but mostly because like. I have this weird opinion in my head that anytime you buy something new, it should be twice as. 18:01.98 Frank good as the old one. Otherwise, it's not worth buying some. 18:04.79 James yeah 18:04.87 Frank I just want to double my nits. Well, doubling the nits is easy. 18:07.58 James Yeah, and I think... 18:08.99 Frank Double the brightness. 18:10.04 James Double the brightness. Yeah, I think this one I probably do need to plug in the HDMI because it says the DisplayPort doesn't support HDR or VRR, but I'm not actually sure if I'm going to use those at all on this. 18:11.33 Frank Yeah. 18:20.27 James And then the HDR supported. It legitimately just says. hdr and doesn't say anything else which means 18:25.61 Frank No. 18:26.08 James it doesn't support hdr at all that is what it that's what that means if it doesn't say 18:29.75 Frank Yeah, because if you're not micro l LED or OLED, you're not getting HDR. 18:34.11 James Yeah. 18:35.13 Frank It just can't make it bright enough. 18:36.90 James Yeah. 18:37.16 Frank It can't do it. 18:38.46 James But. I think if you're in this scenario and I'm interested in like listener feedback, if you did have an ultra wide or you do have an ultra wide with a Mac. is that something you're using how is that working for you what are your scales with your resolutions and I've been using this, obviously, with my Windows machine and my Surface Ultra. 18:52.60 Frank Yeah. 18:52.75 James And it's fantastic. I just honestly. personally believe that. how my mind works is... let me pick the resolution and then let me pick the scaling whereas mac os is more like 19:04.51 Frank Yeah. 19:06.56 James You pick. a resolution and we'll figure out this like the the scaling is like the scaling picks the resolution it's like reverse kind of and i don't like that Um, 19:15.93 Frank Yeah. 19:16.95 James But that's you know that's a me problem. I guess if you've only ever used Mac. Then. That's... you know. 19:23.54 Frank it It does make logical sense, though, because if you pick a scaling where, you know, the the pixels are 1080p, then it does the math and figures out what's the closest pixel resolution to match the scaling resolution, and it goes to that. 19:34.23 James Yep. 19:37.16 Frank But it is. annoying. The alternative, though, is they give you two sliders, and that's kind of what Windows does. But then Windows, between versions of Windows, they can't decide whether to show you the two sliders or not. 19:48.30 Frank So, like, even Microsoft can't decide. 19:48.82 James Yeah. 19:50.66 Frank which which direction to go and does microsoft still call it font scaling instead of resolution because like they they make that confusing also. 19:58.78 James Uh, no. No, when you go into display settings, I'm going to go here on my Windows machine. 20:00.14 Frank Okay. 20:04.58 James display settings and you have Scale. It just changes the size of the text apps and other items. 20:11.67 Frank Yeah, okay. 20:11.84 James And then it. 20:12.17 Frank They finally just call it scale. 20:12.45 James you get 20:13.35 Frank Yeah. 20:13.68 James At scale. And you can actually actually enter, I mean, you have the dropdown between. like 100 It depends. 20:19.46 Frank Yeah. 20:20.12 James that That list will be different based on your resolution. but then you can also click on it and set it to any resolution you gosh darn want to, to be honest with you. 20:25.73 Frank Yeah. I think you've been able to do that since like Windows 7, at least. You've always been able to type in that box if you wanted to. 20:33.36 James It... It doesn't. It doesn't want you to? 20:37.25 Frank Yeah. 20:36.94 James that's for sure because i think you have to log out and log back in but you can 20:39.06 Frank Yes. yeah 20:42.19 James that's That's for sure. And I do think that that's really nice because I do think the apps. Scale accordingly. you know really really nicely no matter what i do think i personally believe windows has that way better. 20:53.78 James And my personal. 20:54.09 Frank No. 20:54.63 James opinion it's a thousand times better at scaling up it's it's way better everything about windows and scaling applications is a thousand times better than mac os a thousand times better is way better. 20:54.88 Frank No. 21:05.85 James Windows management, scaling, font scaling, it's a thousand times better. All of it's better. Frank, next topic. Okay. 21:11.09 Frank ah 21:12.24 James Um, 21:13.24 Frank I'm shutting up. 21:14.84 James I... I want to... um I was I was... And have been. jealous of you. Frank for a long time. 21:23.87 Frank oh Oh, envy. That's a sin. I don't know why. 21:27.98 James I would say. 21:28.45 Frank Why in the world would you be jealous of me? It's my cat, isn't it? 21:31.87 James had 21:32.26 Frank It's a really good cat. 21:34.40 James Okay, so there's a few things, and I'm jealous of several. uh people you're one of them the envy is high And I would also say... at work for the last 14 years the the .net blog is powered by Um, 21:48.42 James Markdown files in GitHub that that sync. 21:48.93 Frank ah Now I know where you're going. Yes. 21:52.34 James Um, and You had gone down a journey a long time ago of... converting your blog 21:59.47 Frank Yes. 21:59.59 James ah to a static website, correct? 22:03.44 Frank Correct. And I believe you criticized me quite a bit when I finally made that decision. I think mostly you just didn't like my URLs, but that's too bad, James. But yeah, a while ago, I just got tired of servers and I got tired of services. 22:17.27 James who 22:17.28 Frank um Both. And so I went the static HTML route, especially when I figured out that GitHub could just host basically. any repo you create on there, it can create a public access point for. It's been ups and downs um having GitHub host my blog because they kind of take over my domain. And then if I want to host other repos. On. 22:40.58 Frank github it routes them all through my blog now so they become like preclarum .org slash repo name And you can't really change that. It's really awkward. GitHub has the worst settings in and the world. But I've kind of just come to accept it. And it's all good now. 22:57.99 Frank um It's one of those like. it's It's too hard to fight. You just accept it and then move on. So yeah, I use GitHub pages to host my blog. It's been fantastic. 23:09.52 Frank Um... Yeah, it's just a bunch of Markdown files. I i forget. i'm I'm using some. engine out there that compiles the Markdown files into HTML and does all the weird template junk that I really don't care about. 23:22.37 James yeah 23:22.69 Frank um But it's a cute little engine. It's flawless. I haven't had to maintain it at all. Every time I log into my repo, it's like, security this, security that. I'm like, how can there be security? 23:33.04 Frank It's HTML. like there There's no security here. There's no server. 23:36.74 James Yeah. 23:37.61 Frank That's on you guys. I don't care. I think they're complaining about my build tools. I'm probably using an old version of Node or something to compile the website. Don't care. so i just It's been probably one of my most stable blogs I've ever had. 23:50.81 Frank So our view finally moved off of, gosh, what were you using last time? Ghosts? 23:56.45 James I've gone. I've gone through a long... journey and lineage, to be honest with you, because I Had. For a long time. used. 24:07.70 James I had got custom websites and I really started to have like Mott's Codes, like my main website. I did a lot of blogging on Tumblr back in the day. 24:15.27 Frank Right, that's where mine started. 24:15.59 James And then. Yep. And when Tumblr changed. um at that time i got really lucky i was on ghost and i was a kickstarter backer i've been on ghosts for I think 13 years, I want to say, or so. 24:28.23 Frank wow 24:30.13 James Yeah. 24:31.23 Frank And Gus was a... basically a blogging platform. Is that what it was? 24:34.59 James They start. They started as a blogging. ah platform. sort of like a WordPress competitor. 24:41.14 Frank Mm hmm. 24:41.51 James Now they do. newsletters and insights and social features and everything under the sun. And it's actually really, they have really great service. 24:51.61 James Like you can have signup lists, you can have distribution. So when you send a blog, it sends it out to people. You can send individual ones, private ones, paid subscriptions, all these things. 24:56.42 Frank Nice. 25:00.16 James What I... Um, And i loved I loved it too. And in the beginning, you could actually just write Markdown. You still can, but they really don't want you to. 25:09.34 Frank Wow. 25:09.37 James That's the TLDR. 25:11.09 Frank Fascinating. 25:11.36 James because it... it's really hard to edit because everything of these block based systems And. Unfortunately, how I work. is not that. way in general. I like to write markdown. 25:21.73 James I like to have my things. it's It's very nice just in general. like I can do it the other way, but I feel like editing and going through things and now with AI agents is a lot nicer. 25:29.33 Frank Exactly. 25:30.51 James So... the the The straw that... Broke me. was I was up for renewal last year, and it is now a... i' on I was on like a medium tier because I had like a certain amount of subscribers and blogs or whatever it was. And it was costing me $500 a year. 25:49.46 James to blow you up. 25:50.73 Frank Impressive. Wow. Okay. 500 a year. I'm trying to do the math really quick in my head. So let's call it 30, 40 bucks a month. um Yeah, that's... 26:01.88 Frank I hope they're doing a lot with the newsletter there. But if they are doing like a subscription service on top of that, like managing payments and all that, I get it. Because once you cross that monetary boundary, everything turns to $50 a month. So I actually totally get that pricing model. 26:17.72 James ah until I totally get it. and you know, ah There are probably ways for me to lower it down. I will say like over the years ofve as they've upgraded Ghost, I've never had really a problem migrating. They have great tools that like help you migrate your themes. 26:31.03 James Like. Definitely this last one was. Not necessarily like the best for migration, but I got it running. My site was there. Everything was working. but I hadn't really blogged in a while. 26:42.47 James But the actual straw was not the price. It was that they stopped. Taking. Discover. card, which was my 26:50.05 Frank Oh, funny. Right. Okay. 26:51.97 James They stopped taking discover card, which also Apple doesn't take for Apple ads, by the way, which is the. 26:56.41 Frank Oh jeez. 26:58.22 James card for my business account. 27:00.52 Frank right 27:00.88 James Okay. 27:01.74 Frank Yeah. 27:01.84 James and And I have like a ah business account and and they give you a ah Discover card. They'll take MasterCard, Visa, but this. So... i went down this this this sort of rabbit hole of trying to figure out how to pay. 27:15.16 James Them they won't let you link up a cat They won't let you mail them a check. They won't let you link it to a bank account. They won't PayPal. They won't do anything. They said, nope, we only accept. 27:27.03 James Visa. MasterCard amx And that's it. And I said, sorry. So then I sign up for a service called privacy, privacy .com. Privacy, weird name, but they allow you, one of their major major functions is to do virtual credit cards. 27:35.24 Frank Okay. 27:41.92 James So you give them... your account. 27:44.93 Frank Great. 27:45.11 James And then you can say, or you give them a credit card and then they will create a credit card for your credit card. 27:48.30 Frank Sure. Yeah. 27:51.05 James That is a MasterCard, which is very nice and not a Discover card. So that's actually how I was using Apple ads. That's how I... 27:56.99 Frank Funny. 27:57.50 James Ended up paying Ghost. And. Totally fine because I only had like one or two cards. It didn't cost me any money. at all from this privacy account. So very nice. And it's a great service if you're in need for something like that and they do a bunch more. 28:11.07 James However, Frank... 28:12.32 Frank Heh heh. Okay. 28:13.33 James In the day and age of... I want to write things with agents and in Markdown, I'd like to host it for free, do the things. 28:19.08 Frank Ding. Yes. 28:22.26 James What if I took 13 years of blog posts, which already went through many years of Tumblr migrations. 28:22.32 Frank Hmm. 28:27.100 Frank Yeah. 28:28.75 James And took. 1 ,200 URLs. 28:33.77 Frank wow 28:34.92 James hundreds upon hundreds of images and gifs. 28:39.26 Frank Yeah. 28:39.19 James hundreds of YouTube video embeds, 28:41.78 Frank Right. 28:41.95 James hundreds of podcast embeds. 28:44.79 Frank Sure. 28:44.98 James And what if I turn that into... my website that was hosted fully. Now I'll link to my blog post. but The TLDR is... I was able to fully using the Copilot CLI. 28:57.49 James over a weekend. 28:59.27 Frank Heh heh. 28:59.42 James um One. continuous run. I don't know how much it cost me. 29:04.04 Frank Yeah. 29:03.100 James Um, One continuous run, and I don't know what model it was. I started this maybe five months ago. I one shot at it. 29:10.83 Frank Night. 29:10.94 James And it did it all. And it was up and running. And we went through a decision tree together. And what it ended up doing was it converted from um The nice thing on goes is you could export everything into one zip file. 29:25.22 James So everything at all your entire website. 29:26.83 Frank Excellent. Yep. 29:27.60 James themes, images, posts, all this stuff, boom, here it is. Beautiful. I said take this, do it here. 29:32.57 Frank Yeah. 29:34.41 James So the the basic... pipeline that it had was it converted it Um, into a way that I have folder based structure with names. ah for them with uh, um, front matter in front of them. Like you said, they control visible, invisible, all this stuff. 29:48.55 James When you have build and compile and uses Hugo. um which is um a beautiful from Steve and Friends. 29:51.56 Frank Okay. 29:55.85 James Um, framework for building websites, it goes through Hugo and I don't know why it chose Hugo, but it did. It's great. 30:02.48 Frank Okay. 30:02.44 James ah But it did it. And it then turns it into a static website. 30:03.83 Frank For sure. 30:06.70 James It outputs it there. ah through this process. And I went through this whole thing. And now I have it have ah so So then i I said, okay, I put it down for a little bit because so I was like, you know what? 30:17.14 James I still i just had paid Ghost. I have a whole 10 months to figure this out. I still have a few months, but I actually already canceled because I was good. 30:22.58 Frank Yeah. Okay. 30:24.80 James I spent one more day. And I did deep research. I said, okay, we did this, but. Let's do yet another one. Cause now there's whole new models, right? I think I used soul six one. I said, let's do another deep research, understand everything. 30:36.34 James did i miss anything what's the plan what's these things 30:38.58 Frank Hmm. 30:39.36 James And it did a little bit of fit and finish at the very end. And I have this in the blog. So I said... Give me a breakdown, like what still is happening before I actually need to publish this. 30:50.22 James it broke it down into we need to have pagination we need to have some like head metadata we need like um some other like alt text we have some raw images we have some legacy tag feeds xyz all this stuff And it walked me through setting up an entire staging environment with GitHub pages and the deployment with Cloudflare, this, this. 31:08.09 Frank ha 31:09.44 James It walked me through the DNS cutover, everything. 31:09.53 Frank Mm. 31:12.33 James And I cut over 100%. The website is faster. It's better. 31:15.90 Frank Yeah. 31:15.78 James It's prettier. I have updated all my apps, all the podcasts, all the speaking stuff. like It is just. gorgy. And I spent another day after I deployed on the bottom of my website, montemagno .com. 31:28.76 James is a real-time. Graph of all of my GitHub contributions and this beautiful background. 31:33.76 Frank Oh gosh. 31:34.02 James It's like, looks like part of it. 31:36.04 Frank Yeah. 31:35.71 James and also when you go to the website if you scroll down just a little bit it will show you all of my recent merges commits issues created and it gets updated every single day because Gosh, darn it. 31:45.90 James I'm a developer. And now I own the code, Frank. I can do whatever the freak I want. I can do whatever the freak I want. I want to use this thing. I want to use that thing. Let's go. You know what? I want to do this thing. 31:53.51 Frank ah 31:53.33 James Boom. It does this thing. It's like so cool, man. I just love it. so i went through this big journey it's there it's so cool i'm in love i just think like 32:04.24 Frank Yeah. 32:04.16 James It's rad. And it did all the redirects, all this stuff. It's like. crazy craziness, everything full back and pat did full analysis. So smart. You should just own, you should own your domain. 32:14.52 James You should own your website. 32:15.01 Frank Yeah. 32:15.72 James You should just own it all. GitHub. I can't believe it. 32:18.25 Frank And make it static. 32:18.31 James It's crazy. 32:19.17 Frank Your blog should just be static it's in this world. So I want to be condescending and be like, welcome to 10 years ago, James. But yeah, this is, I mean, nowadays you just have no excuse. 32:30.82 Frank Because like when I did this, I kind of did it by hand. And it was a little bit of a pain in the butt because I was going straight from Tumblr to Markdown. 32:38.29 James Yeah. 32:38.56 Frank So I basically had to hand go through every post and fix formatting and fix up. ugly html like i used some tools and such but it it was nasty nowadays i'm surprised you didn't just use baby luna and you're just like hey baby luna extra high mode uh crank on this for a while and you know check every single article individually and give me a full report and make sure they're all converted because yeah, there's just no excuse now. 33:03.96 Frank Like it's so easy now. Even the cheapest, dumbest model can do this kind of conversion. 33:05.35 James Yeah. 33:08.88 Frank Pretty high fidelity too. I really don't think you needed Sol to convert a blog over to a static website. 33:10.43 James Oh yeah. 33:15.20 Frank But for like design things, you know, yeah, bigger models are usually better at designing things and such. 33:20.79 James Yeah. so now you're totally right all tiny little models for some of the advanced design stuff i'm using some some mid to to bigger models but the thing i did recently was i 33:27.98 Frank Mm hmm. 33:30.70 James I know people are gonna hate this but It's certain. I started writing. for ah quite a lot of blogs in the last year and a half like first draft with AI and then I'd go and fix it up. 33:41.98 James And this blog that I wrote. and reviewed, I didn't edit like hardly anything on. Because I did this, I said. I want you to go through all of my blogs from 20. 33:53.59 James 24 backwards because I wrote all those by hand. That's I want you to come up with. 33:56.71 Frank Yeah. 33:58.72 James How does James write a blog post? 33:59.100 Frank Style guide. 34:00.32 James what's 34:00.51 Frank Yeah. 34:01.17 James Oh God, structure, words, verbiage, this, that, all I do this stuff. 34:03.73 Frank Mm hmm. 34:05.50 James Make a skill. When I create a new blog post topic, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, do this thing. That's how I want you to do. I know it sounds super cheesy, but like. now it's here so then i generate this blog and then i can go and massage blogs and say okay so following this guideline i can update it as i go 34:18.07 Frank Yeah. 34:18.89 James which is you know my goal at the end of the day. for it. so Seemed to work okay. 34:23.50 Frank I... I believe the technical term for those kinds of skills is called unslop. So you just create an unslopped skill MD that you need to keep around. 34:34.16 Frank And yeah, I've kind of done the same thing. um It's funny because um I've switched to the first draft I do usually with dictation. So my first draft usually is purely my words. 34:43.32 James Ah. 34:46.66 Frank but they're spoken words. Then I have the AI. turn it into a blog. Then I hand read it. and either hand edit it or tell it like paragraph by paragraph what to change so that's my actual favorite current setup now because you can just talk into like a dictation thing for like 10 minutes with your 35:06.77 Frank random, incoherent, poor train of thought thing, and it'll make sense of it. And that's kind of my favorite way to write now, because I find that having AIs generate the first draft, they come out. 35:18.97 Frank too AI-y or they dwell on the wrong things, things I don't care about. So actually, I prefer to just blah, blah, blah with my human voice. 35:29.45 Frank and have it fix that up. That's my current favorite workflow. 35:33.49 James What if I told you, Frank Kruger, that's exactly my approach to doing this, by the way, is... 35:36.87 Frank sweet perfect 35:37.79 James I do this for... trip reports. I do it for like my k connects. I've done that for my connects forever. And now this is how I do it. um i was showing someone this i was actually in the cli the copilot cli and i just i hold down the space bar and I just go. 35:53.48 Frank Yeah. 35:53.52 James And I just scroll, scroll, scroll. And and I like send it this ginormous. 35:57.47 Frank Yeah. 35:57.37 James I will ramble for like 10 minutes. 35:58.46 Frank Unformatted. 35:59.80 James Unform in. 35:59.92 Frank Poor sentences, wrong words, because the dictation is terrible, depending on the app. 36:00.12 James Doesn't it matter. Yep. 36:04.78 James It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter. 36:06.02 Frank Yeah. 36:06.14 James And that's the beautiful part about it. And that's my exact approach because. I like to say like. This is from my dome, exactly the sections, this and what I want to go through. and then let's clean it up and let's then clean it up together. 36:16.74 Frank Mm hmm. 36:17.81 James That's totally how I do it. And I love it. And even... I know it sounds really cheesy. But. I've sometimes recently I'd very, very rarely I don't encourage this, but I've had some Things where I need to give like a really detailed Like. description. And I'm like, I want this to be AI but not AI. 36:37.70 James So I'll like copy someone's response. Like someone wrote this to me. I need to write a response. Here's what I want to write. 36:42.52 Frank you 36:42.41 James And I blah. 36:44.04 Frank Mm hmm. 36:43.96 James And then he said, Make it structured. Do this thing. Go. 36:47.27 Frank Yeah. 36:47.37 James And then I'll review it and I'll go through this thing. But what I do, at least for that. And before I slop it over. is I go. Hey. This went from voice to copilot to me editing into here. 36:59.60 James Like I always let people know. And I try not to really do that. 37:01.30 Frank Yeah. 37:01.65 James I don't like, I don't like that mechanism. 37:04.08 Frank Yeah. 37:04.40 James But. If I want it really tight, really professional, I'll go down that route. 37:09.01 Frank Mm hmm. 37:09.10 James I think the blog post is a great example is like you're going down this and boom. And additionally, as I'm almost writing the blog post, I'll literally tell it midstream. I'll say, and here is like where I'd want a visual diagram. 37:20.80 James that you draw that does X, Y, Z, shows these. 37:22.44 Frank Yeah. 37:23.29 James And then it freaking makes the diagram, Frank. 37:25.47 Frank Yeah. 37:25.57 James It just does the thing. And I was like, if you look at my blog. 37:27.60 Frank Yeah. 37:29.32 James the montemagno .com blog. These ones. are all generated. Bye. some open AI model. And they're super good. I was like, give me the architect to do this stuff, blah, blah, blah. And it says, here's the whole pipeline. Here's the thing. Here's the bar charts, all this stuff. And they're not crazy. 37:48.17 Frank No. 37:48.27 James But it's like. Bro. Ciao. 37:50.42 Frank Yeah. 37:51.02 James yeah Just saying, it's not good. 37:51.46 Frank Yeah. I've even refined mine in my agent's MD to be like, here are your different ways to draw graphics. Like um if we need a plot, use Python with matplotlib. 38:03.33 Frank Feel free to hand draw SVGs. 38:03.43 James Yeah. 38:06.45 Frank I am not interested in PNGs. 38:06.37 James Yeah. 38:08.33 Frank Don't use an image generator. I want you to create graphics. You can even create code that generates SVGs. So I give it like these four or five different ways that I prefer it to create diagrams. 38:20.02 Frank And I find with all things, giving it a few constraints helps a lot. because then it's not just wandering around the forest. 38:26.18 James Well, talking about that, switching topics one last time here possibly, is I saw that somebody had ah their biggest release of iCircuit ever, and somebody had a really cool ah launch video. 38:33.09 Frank Oh yeah. Yeah. 38:37.08 James Do you want to talk about how that came apart? About. 38:39.88 Frank Oh, because now I have to give you credit. i I just want to say one last thing on the blog thing, and then I'll give you credit. 38:44.91 James Okay. Okay, good. 38:46.60 Frank um I actually had someone, um I was talking to someone about their WordPress site, and their WordPress site got hacked because WordPress sites get hacked if you're not updating them because they're big targets out there. 38:58.71 Frank Anyone who's ever run a website sees everyone phishing, looking for special WordPress configurations in their server logs. And I told the person, It's actually through a friend, but I'm like, it needs to be a static website. You do not need WordPress anymore. So your job now is to get an AI to convert it over to a static website, get it to generate a one. Stop. 39:21.49 Frank skill or script or something so that it can deploy that website. And from now on, if you need to change to that website, you just talk to the AI and you tell it what you need to change in that website. 39:32.05 Frank And it was like seeing a little light bulb go off in their head. They're like, oh my God, that's so much better. I'm like, yes, that is so much better. So I've been on a little crusade slash I might even just start a company called you don't need WordPress anymore. 39:38.70 James Yeah. 39:44.12 Frank I'm going to convert everything over to AI for you. Anyway, I just wanted to throw that in because it's just funny timing that I was just talking to someone about this. 39:53.45 James That's awesome. I love it. 39:55.16 Frank So yes, James. 39:55.35 James Yeah, that's so cool. 39:56.88 Frank Yes. So now James credit time because ah yes, I circuit 1 .16 is finally out. It's taken me way too long, but it's the biggest update ever. 40:06.93 Frank It's got some amazing new features in it. New spice component, which is like. it's my my app is a circuit simulator but you can put other kind of circuit simulators inside my simulator that's amazing uh it also has vhdl and verilog support so you can put hardware descriptions of ICs in the app. 40:28.75 Frank industry standard. Digital. descriptions of ICs, and they just run. They just run. They run in my ah analog simulator that runs on your iPhone and on your iPad. It's amazing. Oh, and by the way, there's also a full Pico, Raspberry Pi Pico emulator in there. That emulator is sophisticated enough to run MicroPython and CircuitPython, okay? So you can write... 40:52.83 Frank python code that runs in an interpreter running in an emulator running in an electronic circuit simulator on the iPad. 41:00.25 James this 41:02.97 Frank And if that doesn't blow your mind enough, I don't know what I can possibly do because that is more levels of inception than I have ever generated. Let me repeat. On an iPad, a simulator, running an emulator. running an interpreter. It's freaking amazing. 41:16.95 James And is that the is that the one that does the Brian's brain simulation? Because I saw that in your video and I wrote that in. 41:21.95 Frank Yeah. 41:25.45 James College in wind forms. 41:26.45 Frank Sure. uh this was game of life but yeah they're all the same thing yeah cellular automata just it's it's the classic example if you want to show off like a graphics thing and make it look 41:29.64 James Game of life. Yeah. 41:37.01 Frank Futury Spacey. 41:36.74 James So good. Well, you see it and you immediately know what it is. 41:38.26 Frank Something. 41:40.30 James You know what I mean? 41:40.72 Frank Yeah. 41:40.98 James And it's so good. Yeah. 41:42.50 Frank It's just such a good demo. um Yeah. So, ah right. So a part of that, I wanted to do a little bit of marketing, even though I'm terrible at marketing. And so I wanted to do a little launch video. And you and I were talking after the podcast, I think last week, but I've lost all track of time. I was like, oh, James, I'm going to be up for the next two or three hours editing this launch video together. And you're like. Dude. 42:05.99 Frank Bro. Dude bro. There's a better way now. Like, no, there's not, James. you you must You must spend four to five hours in DaVinci Resolve remembering all the key bindings. 42:16.76 Frank That is how one edits video. That is that is the classic way to do it. And you're like, no no, dude, bro. Dude, bro, what you can do now is use this thing called AI. And I'm like, no, James, I cannot afford video generation AI. 42:28.93 Frank Do you know how expensive that is? It's not even expensive. It's just impossible. You know how many times I've tried to get Google to generate a video for me and I just can't log into it? 42:36.37 James A lot. 42:37.92 Frank I cannot for the life of me get a key into Google to to make videos. I'm willing to give them money. But I can't figure out their authentication system. So I'm like, no, that doesn't work either, James. And you're like, no, dude, bro. There's a better way. And what you explained to me was if you just tell an AI to make you a video. 42:58.21 Frank They are so stubborn now. They will find a way to make you a video. No matter how hacky, no matter how weird, they will find a way to make you a video because they are such people pleasers. 43:04.88 James It's happening. 43:10.70 Frank And you showed me this cool thing, which I totally then just stole from you. which was you had gone through this exercise, it sounds like a few times before. 43:19.27 James ah no 43:20.00 Frank And what you discovered was AIs are really good at making websites and kind of like animations and drawing stuff and putting those together into the HTMLs and the CSSs and the JavaScripts. 43:33.71 Frank And then all it has to do is... Screen record that. And then guess what you have? A video. and ah One part of me died. The engineer pure graphics part of me died. 43:46.90 Frank But that's fine. I just took a shovel and I picked that part up and I threw it out the window. And then the rest of me was just like full steam ahead because it sounds absolutely wonderful. Because it really is absolutely wonderful. 43:58.35 Frank So you gave me a few scripts files to start with. But I'm pretty sure anyone could do this and just come up with their own script files if you just give it some background and tell them tell it how you want to go about this. 44:04.18 James Let's tell it. 44:07.67 Frank Um... 44:08.94 Frank You even gave me a skill that I threw that out the window at the same time, too. But um I totally copied your script files. And what it did was just generated basically a presentation, but with some embedded videos because I had done some screen recordings and I pointed it to my screen recordings. And I said, here's here's the launch thing. Here's my release notes. Here are the topics I want to hit. And it generated a release video. I told it I want it to be 30 to 45 seconds, you know. blah blah blah. 44:38.06 Frank And my goodness, um I think for about... three dollars i call it this was soul by the way i think if i were to do it again i'd probably use um one of the anthropic models i've heard they're a little better at design but i was using soul and it came out fine 44:43.54 James who 44:49.55 James who 44:51.41 Frank um But actually it didn't come out fine. But the beautiful thing is it's all just HTML and scripts. So I'm like, I don't like your color blue. um I don't like what you did here. um you Actually, I typed it wrong first time I said I was going to put this on YouTube. 45:06.02 Frank So its it's font sizes and such were just wrong. 45:06.05 James ah 45:09.04 Frank Because I wanted it for um X for Twitter, where you know you want your fonts and such to just be bigger and proportions to be different and all that. 45:08.99 James yeah 45:18.01 Frank So I went through five revisions of it. Which was... Easy. Because all it's doing is editing HTML and junk and then um screen recording that through like a headless version of Chrome or something. God knows. I don't want to know. And it just made that video for me, James. and That's freaking awesome. So thank you so much. That's how I'm making every video from now on. And I can refine my process now. 45:43.52 Frank But what's cool is like... That video's on Git now. And like I can modify it and play with it and change the theme over time. And maybe for the 1 .17 release, I'll refine the theme theme and all that kind of stuff. but Boy, what a revelation. That was so much better than spending... 45:58.92 Frank three four hours and da vinci resolve and honestly came out much better than i would have produced 46:04.31 James Yeah. I said a few things. that I recently did on top of this. Uh, first and foremost is exactly like you said, I just, I was just like, what if I do it? 46:15.06 James Cause I've tried it in the past and it turned out. 46:15.71 Frank Yeah. 46:16.86 James Okay. And I, I, we, I tried this a while ago for the hydro fusion launch and. And then we had went through a bunch of other things and they they did their own and then had designers doing it. It was like beautiful, right? But I was like. That was interesting interesting. That wasn't bad. 46:27.97 James I was like, that wasn't bad. I gave it a prompt and it did the thing. 46:29.62 Frank Mm hmm. 46:31.24 James And then I tried it again with a bunch of different models. and i agree i think like the the claw models like are very good at design So, but I also don't want to waste all my tokens ahead of time because it'd be very expensive to do that process. 46:40.03 Frank Yeah, exactly 46:41.16 James I'd almost be like, okay, here's everything. Are you able to do a quick analysis and like see how you can improve the general design and see what it does to give it the base work? So I went through this exact same thing. And now what I've been trying to do is come up with like um marketing kits for my apps like you're talking about what's the design guidelines give me the assets give me the things what i found and you'll start to see these like on a few channels that i make videos for at work 46:57.00 Frank Nice. 47:06.84 James is... Instead of me... trying to make the most beautiful like 16 by nine and nine by 16 thing and just drive this thing. I can give it. images, videos. do the things, give it the prompt, have it do the thing. And then you can also, Matt. soak up on the team was like, 47:23.38 James You know what I really want is I want like some B roll of a really fast car going, boom, really quick, like two seconds. 47:27.48 Frank Yeah. Right. 47:28.61 James And then I was like, oh, I think we have stock footage and Vato, blah, blah, blah. And he's like. I had the AI make it already. And it's just he's like, I opened up Blender and it just like did it. 47:34.18 Frank at all. 47:36.11 James And it's like, done. He's like, it cost 20 cents. Done. Right? and And I thought that was so cool because like you just didn't think, was it exactly as good as a designer is going to do? No, no way. If I was paying a designer or spending a bajillion out, like no way. 47:45.91 Frank Yeah. 47:48.11 James But also I would not be able to make any of these launch videos ever because guess what? I never have. So here's my recommendation for people. I've actually broken. Bye. Tiny clips into three repos. I have tiny clips The repo? 48:03.61 James The main one, which is just the app I have. tiny clips website, which is just the website. And then I have Tiny Clips Marketing. And what this is, is all of the launch of videos or images or assets that. have no need or desire to be in my main repo there's cluttering them up And then also... 48:22.55 James Um, none of the stuff that doesn't belong on the website. However, They all live side by side cohesively on my machine. so The agents can like look at each other and do the thing when I'm launching a new video. 48:28.86 Frank Mm hmm. definite 48:32.46 James So I've basically come up with, at least for tiny clips. the I'm releasing a new version, like a big launch 2 .0 launch. Like let's go big. And then I have another one, which is. I'm putting out like a smaller release. I want you to highlight. these three things. And here's like the stanza. So I can kind of make this and this design style, of these things. 48:51.58 James I've done it for a bunch of sites and everything I do. the new true magic. Frank. 48:57.48 Frank Okay. 48:58.31 James Is I now Say, I would like for you to create it in nine by 16 and 16 by nine. Give me two. 49:04.26 Frank Wow. 49:04.66 James Do it twice. 49:06.14 Frank Yeah. ah 49:06.86 James Twice. Because some things look better on Tik TOK and YouTube shorts versus like landscape mode. 49:10.28 Frank Yeah. 49:12.40 James So that's my new go-to, but dude, I am, I am honestly. Blown away and it'll only get better from here, which is really great. But I will say. Like. I'm blending this. 49:23.59 James this kind of thing. If you don't, if you give it a prompt, by the way, and you don't give it a lot of information. like the very first thing that happened to me was it was like, I'll make a small animated thing. And then I will like. 49:34.04 James take your screenshots and just put them in. And I was like, Nope, that's not what I wanted. 49:36.93 Frank Yeah. 49:37.68 James I want, so give it videos, give it, I want this video here. 49:38.08 Frank Not good enough. Mm hmm. 49:41.06 James I want this thing here. And then also if I have a video or a screenshot. I'll say. Here is a representation, but... I want you to not use the screenshot. I want you to build a a diagram, build a visualization that's animated, right? 49:53.36 Frank Yeah. 49:55.01 James And then I want these things in the background. I want this and I want that. I just did one recently where it's like. really small. And it's like in VS Code in the agent's window, if you hit done or you hit done on a merge PR, it'll do a little confetti boost. 50:09.10 Frank Hmm. 50:09.20 James So I want to make a little short that was like celebrate the small wins. So I recorded a bunch of videos and I said, I want to. 15 second video, no more than this. And I want. I want it to be like. Three stanzas. boom, boom, boom, and like these two videos. And I want you to create music that is synthesized with like Merge a PR. 50:26.33 James celebrate and it's like boom and like it zooms in it does a thing and then at the end i'm like so confetti everywhere and it freaking did it and i was like dude it's so good Right. I'm not saying it's the most amazing video in the entire world. 50:34.13 Frank Yeah. 50:36.87 James But dude, I'm like saving myself so much time to focus on the stuff that, you know, matters a lot more that I can do deep dive videos. I'm like, I just put out this one hour video, like me by hand, right. 50:46.56 Frank Mm hmm. 50:46.19 James Editing, doing these things. I just think it's so cool because... Yeah, you would have just never you would have either done that video. And ah like you said, it maybe would have been as good, maybe not. But then you would have wasted so many hours. 50:58.32 James just trying to get that done where I think it turned out great. 50:58.70 Frank Yeah. 51:00.18 James And I, I saw it on YouTube. I got it in my inbox and bam, I was like, so excited about it. 51:04.94 Frank Yeah. I'm so happy I actually put it on the main site right now as kind of the hero image on the main site, icircuitapp .com. um yeah and so the thing i liked about it it took me five revisions because you know the first one i like changed some colors and fonts and layouts because i think at first it was 16 by 9 and then um 51:12.49 James ah 51:22.08 James Mm-hmm 51:23.82 Frank i did I kind of channeled you. I'm like, no, we need more animations. It was looking too much like a PowerPoint. Back. basically i'm like no we need animations and so it added all these animations i'm like Cool. 51:30.14 James Yep. 51:35.28 Frank too many animations and i'm like you need some diagrams and then i generated one i'm like cool, way too many diagrams. Like it was redrawing all its circuits and its terrible ability to draw. 51:46.33 Frank I'm like, okay, do not draw circuits. Like but that's me. I draw the circuits. 51:49.34 James yeah 51:50.50 Frank You make the video. 51:50.90 James Yep. 51:51.59 Frank And then like at the end, like I wanted a feature list at the end and it just wasn't getting it. And finally, I'm like, just pretend you're Steve Jobs. You know how Apple throws up a screen of all these features at the end of every presentation? 52:04.28 Frank That's what I want. It's like. Cool, bro. Gotcha. And that's what it Yeah. 52:08.32 James Exactly. And especially when I'm like animated, do this thing, visualize, do a flash, do a thing. If you tell it more and more. I will also say I circuit app .com seems to have gotten a visual makeover, sir. 52:18.33 Frank Yes, yes. it's It's not complete yet, but ah it's long overdue. So the site, I've been spending a little bit of time just improving the website itself. 52:29.39 Frank It finally supports dark mode and light mode. Look at me joining the 2000s. 52:32.66 James wow 52:34.37 Frank Yeah, i'm I'm getting happy with the website. Not done yet, but um definitely an improvement over the old one. 52:41.47 James i'm proud of you it even has a little band that says what's in new and it's like boom microcontrollers it has wow it's so good i'm very proud of you 52:45.35 Frank Thank you. 52:47.67 James Very proud of you. 52:48.25 Frank I try to impress you, James. 52:50.31 James Yeah, that's good. 52:50.89 Frank I do it for the money and to impress you. 52:53.07 James it's Good. All right. We're about like an hour into this thing next week. I'll give an update on the ultra, which I have. 52:59.31 Frank Ooh. 52:59.48 James and some of the stuff i've been doing with the nvidia pair application which is really cool I don't know if you've heard of this application at all, but it allows you to basically create a mesh network. of your machines and run agents and and and connect remotely to them automatically probably kind of what you're doing with your 3090s or whatever 3070s whatever they are 53:09.66 Frank ah 53:18.55 James Um, 90s? 53:19.48 Frank Through insecure. 3090. So, sir. RTX 3090 through the most insecure interface. I can't tell anyone my IP address because I'm sure they could just break into my local network through my my setup. 53:34.91 James This one is pretty cool. I'm really into it, but I've been doing quite a little bit um here. I don't have the super deluxe model, um but I have been using quite a bit of. um some automations that are running on Recurrent that can just run whenever on. a quen. 53:50.45 James i have this I have this model. 53:50.78 Frank Yeah. 53:51.89 James Let me see what model it is. is it is called I don't have the app open, but it's like a... It's a 9B. one but it's like a distilled so i don't know something magical that quantized some shenanigans but 53:59.85 Frank Mhm. 54:03.76 Frank You were using a q4 uh uh kv cache quantization as far as i saw last time um which is a good model of the 9b it's a good model i i prefer the 27b at 4-bit quantization but um Whatever. 54:17.80 Frank Whatever gets the job done. That's what's important. 54:19.74 James and Trying out a bunch. That's for sure. 54:22.02 Frank Yeah. 54:21.88 James The one nice thing about this one has been so far that it just gives me. a nice local host endpoint. you know on my network and it figures out the proxying for me so Like I'm connecting to my server and video pair locally, but it knows how to talk to my other machine through its secure process. 54:37.30 James there, which is really neat. So anyways, I've been really diving in quite a bit more. I love the hardware i think it's really fascinating watching people respond to it because It's... 54:47.51 James Not really. Like, I think that. It's a device. that really is made for creators and developers and this... this this sort of different type of work. 54:59.75 James So I think if you're just getting it to do 55:00.45 Frank Mhm. 55:02.16 James Normal. Like, I don't think the comparisons are one-to-one even with like. a MacBook Pro in a way, like maybe a studio. or something like that i think would be more comparable on it but i'm really enjoying it i really love the hardware i mean i love the surface hardware too um but we'll give it a few more weeks so i can actually dive a little bit more hands-on next week will also be 55:24.56 Frank Okay. 55:25.62 James github universe which i'll be at so well we will still record next week and we'll have something else we'll probably do a recap of github universe a whole bunch of new things there and then also i'll give a a little update of the surface ultra but we have some some comments and things like that and um Yeah, I think what's fascinating is people seem to be comparing Like, oh, I don't know, just buy a 50-90. And I think like... 55:48.80 James You. 55:49.07 Frank ah 55:49.40 James Good. Could just buy a 5090 as well, but that's not a computer. 55:53.98 Frank And also, Nvidia's discontinuing the 5090, so if you're gonna get a 5090, you better get it now. 56:00.05 James There you go. All right. Well, that's going to do it on that note for this week's merge conflict. So until. Next time, I'll be burning those free tokens locally. because I'm James Montemagno. 56:11.48 Frank And I'm Frank Krueger. Thanks for watching and listening. 56:15.72 James Peace.
